Vantin is used for treating mild to moderate infections caused by certain germs. Vantin is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by interfering with the development of the microorganisms's cell wall so that the wall ruptures, leading to the death of the bacteria.

Take Vantin orally with food.
Vantin works best if it's obtained at the same time every day.
To clean up your infection completely, take Vantin for that full course of cure. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a couple of days.
Vantin shouldn't be given within 2 hours of antacids or H2 antagonists (eg, famotidine).

if you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness) to a penicillin antibiotic (eg, amoxicillin) or other betalactam antibiotic (eg, imipenem).
Some medications may interact with Vantin. Communicate to your doctor if you are taking any other medications, particularly any of the following:
Aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin), cyclosporine, or diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide) because the danger of side effects on the kidney may be increased.

Important safety advice:
Mild diarrhea is common with antibiotic use. But, a more serious sort of diarrhea (pseudomembranous colitis) may seldom happen. Contact your physician right away if stomach pain or cramps, acute diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.
Vantin only operates against bacteria; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold).
Make sure to use Vantin for that complete length of treatment. Your infection may not be cleared up by the medicine totally, should you not. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat later on.
Longterm or repeated use of Vantin might cause another illness. Inform your doctor if indications of another illness occur. Your medicine may have to be adjusted to treat this.
